Syrian Orthodox Priest beheaded in
Mosul as consequences of Pope Benedict's recent speech
SOLNews (Damascus - 11.10.2006). During the meeting
of the Holy Synod of the Syrian Orthodox Church in Damascus
reported the Syrian orthodox Archbishop of Jazirah
& Euphrates, Mor Eustathius Matta
Roham, about the brutal murder of a Syrian orthodox
priest by fanatic Islamic group in Mosul. The
Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church and all the Bishops, the members of
the Holy Synod, were shocked with very sad news from Mosul, Iraq.
According to the Archbishop the Syrian orthodox
priest Father Boulos Iskander
(55) was killed by beheading. Three days ago he was kidnapped by a fanatic
group as consequences of Pope Benedict's recent speech. They forced the
Syrian orthodox community in Mosul
to write 30 large posters denying what the Pope had cited in
respect with Mohammad, the prophet of Islam. Although their request was done,
the fanatics killed the priest. The Bishop of Mosul H.G. Mor Gregorios Saliba Shemun received the tragedy news during the evening
session of the Holy Synod. He immediately left the meetings returning to Mosul to be with the
faithful at this very difficult time.
The funeral service for father Boulus
Iskender held on 13th. October in Mosul. About 500 people
attended the funeral ceremony.
